High School (G9-12)

Welcome to the High School at Beijing City International School.

Greetings and welcome to the High School section. Our High School covers grades 9 to 12. In grades 9 and 10 students are finishing the last two years of their IB Middle Years Programme, while the Grade 11 and 12 students are engaged in their IB Diploma Programme. We also offer our own High School Diploma that students can use in support of their applications to colleges and universities around the world.

At the time of writing, we have around 90 High School students, coming from over 40 different countries. Many of our students have been with us since the opening of the school, while many are recent arrivals. New or old, our students form a very cohesive group, and I think it's a good idea to highlight reasons why this should be so:

  • The curriculum is of great help in this regard – it is challenging, yet rewarding at the same time. It fosters a sense of curiosity, and empowers students to put what they learn to good use;
  • Our student groups – be they sports teams, rock bands, dramatic ensembles or Chess Warriors – promote the school in a very positive light and welcome new members openly;
  • The Mission and Vision of the school encourages our students to be responsible, contributing members of society.

As students go through our High School years, they grow emotionally and intellectually. Many of them take on leadership roles. They use the opportunities to prove themselves reflective, creative and focused thinkers when they take on challenges such as the MYP Personal Project in Grade 10 and the DP Extended Essay in Grade 11. At all times, they are supported by a highly experienced, hard-working faculty. Our expectation (and, again, it is something we support the students with) is that gradually students will take on more and more responsibility for their learning. This approach, allied to the high-quality academic programmes, will set our students up for sustained success in whatever universities they attend after BCIS.

Successful students in the High School tend to be those who work hard, follow advice and ask for help when they need it. They also tend to be those who join in our activities – who make a positive contribution to school life.

Our aim is to ensure that all of our students enjoy (and enjoy the benefits of!) this kind of success.
