Learning Support
|
There are four Learning Support (LS) teachers across the school serving Nursery through Grade 12. Dr. Reed Rhodes works with students in the lower Elementary School (Nursery through Grade 2), while Mrs. Pamela McManus works with students in the upper Elementary School (Grade 3 through Grade 5). Mrs. Pushpa Dasari works with students in the Middle School, while Mr. Wally Mann works with students in the High School. Specifically, the LS teachers are responsible for supporting students at both ends of the learning spectrum ranging from students with learning difficulties to students who are highly capable. The LS teachers provide a variety of services including reviewing previous records, gathering information, conducting individual assessments, writing reports, recommending strategies to classroom teachers and parents, delivering individualized instruction in one-to-one and small group situations, and supporting students both within and outside of their classrooms. Most students with learning difficulties enter the programme through a referral process initiated by teachers and/or parents. Some enter by providing documentation of participation in a support programme from a previous school. A new initiative, the differentiation of instruction for students who are highly capable, will be trialled this year. At BCIS, highly capable means high performance or demonstrated achievement in intellectual ability, academic aptitude, thinking, leadership ability, visual or performing arts, or psychomotor ability. There is no formal identification process to determine if a student is highly capable. Based on a student’s achievement level, aptitude, or ability level, a teacher may provide different content, a different approach to learning, or a different learning outcome. Teachers of students who are highly capable are provided with differentiation strategies that are tailored to further the development of these students’ strengths.
