Health Service
Health CentreThe Health Centre is located on the first floor of the Elementary School building with easy access and transportation. It is attended by two full-time registered nurses. Special Health NeedsIf your child has any special health needs or problems this should be communicated to the school nurse. This information can be very important to a successful experience in school. Examples of such needs are as follows:
Medication Administration at SchoolSchool regulations do not allow the nurse to dispense medicine, including over the counter medications, without a doctors written order. No medication shall be administered by school employees until a "Permission to Administer Medication to Students Form" has been completed and returned to the school nurse. A new form is required when, at any time during the year, changes in the dosage are made or a new/different medication is started. The form is available in the school Health Centre or can be downloaded below. Administration of medications, especially short term, should be done at home whenever possible. However, if a student is required to take prescription or non-prescription medication during the school day, the following guidelines must be met:
Communicable DiseaseFor the welfare of all, please do not send a child who is not feeling well to school. The control of contagious diseases depends on the cooperation of all families in the school. Please observe the following rules:
Please report all communicable diseases to the school office. Communicable diseases include: chicken pox, pink eye, flu, impetigo, head lice, scabies, measles, mumps, whooping cough, ring worm, roseola, strep throat, German measles, mononucleosis, and scarlet. If your child is ill with a communicable disease, please notify the nurse immediately. We strongly urge you to make a morning inspection of your child before sending him or her to school. Permanent Health RecordsRecords are kept at school for each student. This includes disease and immunization records, as well as a record of physical exams, screenings, allergies, accidents and any other health problems the school should be aware of in order that the student’s needs can be anticipated and cared for. Off-Campus Health ServiceIf a student becomes ill in school he/she will be sent to the nurse who will then decide whether parents will be contacted. In the event of an extreme emergency a child will be taken to Vista Clinic. Every effort will be made to notify parents or their designated emergency contact person in this case. Please see the following rules:
Absence from SchoolThe nurse receives health information about sick children who are absent from school each day. In the case of a child who is absent for over 2 days, the nurse will contact parents for further information. Please feel free to call the school nurse should you have any questions about your children’s health condition. Please see the following links for more information about the Health Centre and about general health information.
