If your child has any special health needs or problems this should be communicated to the school nurse. This information can be very important to a successful experience in school. Examples of such needs are as follows:

1. Bee sting allergy.
2. Allergy to another substance.
3. Difficulty with vision, hearing, or speech.
4. Need for medication during the school day.
5. Need for special aids, such as crutches, wheelchairs, etc.

BCIS Health Centers provide students and staff with the following health care services:

• Medical treatment, including first aid, emergency and routine medication administration.

• Health education, including health prevention/promotion and acute/chronic conditions.

In addition, our Health Centers maintains student medical records detailing students’ current conditions, medicine and food allergies, immunizations, and emergency contact information.

In order to provide the most effective services, the School Nurse’s communication with parents is essential. We request parents provide the following information:

• Emergency contact information
• Medical conditions and reaction/treatment
• Special health needs
• Allergies and reaction/treatment
• Immunization record
• Medication information (routine and emergency medications)
• Insurance information
• Other information necessary for students receiving health care at school

School regulations do not allow the School Nurse to dispense medicine, including over the counter medications, without a doctor’s written order. No medication shall be administered by the School Nurse until a "Permission to Administer Medication to Student Form" has been completed by parents, and returned to the School Nurse. A new Permission to Administer Medication to Student Form is required when, at any time during the year, changes in the dosage are made or a new/different medication is started. The Form is available in the school Health Center or can be downloaded below.

Administration of medications, especially short term, should be done at home whenever possible. However, if a student is required to take prescription or non-prescription medication during the school day, the following guidelines must be met:

• Any medication to be administered must be brought to school in a pharmacy-labeled container which includes the child's full name, name of drug and dosage, time and quantity to be given, and the physician's name if it is a prescription medicine. It is REQUIRED that parents deliver medication to the School Nurse in person and that they personally inform the School Nurse regarding the administration of the medication in the school setting.
• Students may not transport medicines: for the health and safety of students, no student will be allowed to transport any medicine (prescription or non-prescription) to school or to return the medicine home. Parents or guardians must deliver the medicine to the School Nurse. They must pick up any remaining medicine from the Health Center. The School Nurse will ensure that the medicine is promptly locked in a secure location and is not left on a desk or counter. The School Nurse will count and record the number of pills upon receipt. All medication administered at the Health Center are documented in the students’ health records which are kept safely in the Health Center.
• All medicine shall be picked up by parents at the end of each school year.

For the welfare of all, please do not send a child who is not feeling well to school. The control of contagious diseases depends on the cooperation of all families in the school. Please observe the following rules:

• Children should not be in school if they have a fever OR diarrhea OR have vomited, please keep them at home for: a fever, 48 hours after symptoms have past; diarrhea or vomiting, 72 hours after symptoms have past.
• A child who has signs of contagious disease such as pink eye, impetigo, etc., should not be sent to school, and parents should take the child to see doctor.
• Strep throat: in cases of suspected or diagnosed strep throat, the child should be kept out of school until the diagnosis is made and/or treatment has been underway for at least 24 hours.
• Lice: until treated or nit free.
• Chicken pox: 7-10 days until all scab areas are dry.
• Any time your child show signs of illness that may be passed to other children.
  
  

Please report all communicable diseases to the School Nurse immediately. Communicable diseases include but are not limited to:

• COVID-19
• Varicella (chickenpox): until scabs are crusted over
• Impetigo
• Whooping Cough
• Mononucleosis
• Scarlet Fever
• Conjunctivitis (pink eye)
• Flu
• Measles
• Mumps
• Scabies
• Head Lice: until nit free
• Ringworm
• Roseola
• Strep Throat:In cases of suspected or diagnosed strep throat, the child should be kept out of school until the diagnosis is made and/or treatment has been under way for at least twenty four (24) hours.
• German Measles
• Hand-foot-mouth disease (HFMD)
• Herpangina
• Norovirus infection

• Bacillary dysentery

If your child is ill with a communicable disease, please notify the School Nurse immediately. We strongly urge you to make a morning inspection of your child before sending him or her to school.

1. Droplet
   • Prevent transmission of pathogens spread through close respiratory or mucous membrane contact
   • Includes influenza, adenovirus, SARS.
   • Isolate students and staff exhibiting signs of infection from rest of community.
   • Follow strict hand-washing procedure.
   • Advise respiratory hygiene.
   • Use of mask by infected individuals during transport.
   • Notification of appropriate health officials.
2. Airborne Precautions
   • Prevent transmission of infectious agents that remain infectious over long distances when suspended in air.
   • Includes varicella (chickenpox), rubeola virus (measles).
   • Isolate students and staff exhibiting signs of infection from rest of community.
   • Use temporary portable solutions to aid in air movement until transport arranged.
   • Prepare for movement to facility that has appropriate airborne infection isolation.
   • Follow strict hand-washing procedure.
   • Advise respiratory hygiene.
   • Use of mask by all individuals during transport.
   • Notification of appropriate health officials.
3. Contact Precautions
   • Prevent transmission of infectious agents which are spread by direct or indirect contact by the infected individual or the individual’s environment
   • Includes intestinal tract pathogens, c. difficile, staphylococcal infections
   • Isolate students and staff exhibiting signs of infection from rest of community.
   • Follow strict hand-washing procedure.
   • Use of gloves when in contact with individual’s skin or surfaces and articles in close proximity.
   • Notification of appropriate health officials.

Health records are kept at school for each student. The record includes disease and immunization records, as well as a record of physical exams, screenings, allergies, accidents and any other health problems the school should be aware of in order that the student’s needs can be anticipated and cared for.

If a student becomes ill in school, he/she will be sent to the School Nurse who will then decide if the child needs to be sent home or to be sent to a hospital. School Nurse will notify the respective principal and parents or the designated emergency contact person of student’s illness or injury. In the event of an extreme emergency or a life-threatening situation, the child will be taken to a hospital immediately for further consultation and treatment. Please see the following rules:

• When a child displays a temperature of 37.0℃/98.6oF, the child will be kept at the Health Center for temperature monitoring. Second temperature checking will be done in 15-20-minutes.
• When a child displays a fever of 37.3℃/99.1oF, the parents will be notified and will be requested to collect the child from school. The School Nurse will request that the child is kept at home 48 hours after the symptoms have past, so as to ensure rest and complete recovery and to minimize risk of exposure to other students.
• If the child needs off-campus health service, School Nurse will contact parents or their designated emergency contact person to confirm which health care facility they would like us to take the child to.
• The ambulance services will be arranged if needed.

The School Nurse receives health information about sick children who are absent from school each day. The School Nurse will contact parents for further detailed information and make record for each sick child every school day.
