SS STUDENT COUNCIL FUNDRAISING

Dennis Wang

Beijing City International School's (BCIS) Secondary School (SS) Student Council acts as a liaison between the SS administration and students. We deliver programs, activities and events that serve the student body, including a variety of charitable activities.

Despite our school campus remaining closed during this period, SS Executive Student Council continues to meet via video chat and work on different projects. Our first project was a fundraiser to raise money to purchase masks for children's hospitals in Wuhan and Hubei province. Through the extensive WeChat network of our students and families, we were able to raise over 9,000 RMB in a single week. We were so happy to see all the donations pouring in. It was heartening to see so many students maintaining school spirit even when we are scattered around the world. For this project we collaborated with Roundabout, a Beijing-based charity BCIS supports. They helped us reach out to the mask producers and hospitals in Hubei province; we were happy to learn that Wuhan didn't need any more masks, so we bought and donated masks to Hebei Yanda Ludaopei Hospital, a children's blood disease hospital in Yanjiao, Hebei.

Student Council is also continuing to contribute to wider school activities. We are preparing a video assembly for secondary school, featuring student and teacher videos to share with the SS. Our famous "Kahoots" quizzes continue too, our first zoom Kahoot will take place soon with fantastic prizes on offer!

Student Council is an important part of student life, being separated as we are during online learning it is easy to forget about our school community. Only now do we realize how important socializing is for the SS experience. Student Council will continue to work and plan projects to keep our school spirit alive, even when we can't all be together at the BCIS main campus.
