BCIS Alumni Story
As a Senior Manager at Tencent's Investment Department in Hong Kong, Emily has always believed that "true investment extends far beyond numbers and fleeting trends." Her gaze pierces through financial statements, focusing on innovative forces that can empower traditional industries through technology. When recalling her most memorable case, she mentions an Israeli startup that optimized global urban public transportation with an intelligent dispatching system, reducing carbon emissions by 30%. "The charm of the software industry lies in its role not just as a technological revolution, but as an amplifier of social value," Emily notes. With a dual degree in Mathematics and Economics from the University of California, Los Angeles, and a master’s in finance from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, she has continuously honed her analytical skills while always keeping "creating long-term value" as the guiding principle for her investment decisions.
From Data Science to Finance, a Professional Journey Shaped by Fortuity
Who would have guessed that this rising star in the investment world didn't initially dream of a career in finance? In college, Emily held admission offers for data science from multiple prestigious universities but chose to accept the offer from MIT's finance program at the last moment. "How many things in life are truly 'inevitable'?" she recalls with a smile. Just as she accidentally discovered golf as a child when a tennis summer camp was fully booked and went on to become a golfer, she has always embraced twists and turns with an open mind. After entering the investment industry, she found that the underlying logic of finance and data science is surprisingly interconnected: both require keen insight and rational risk-taking. "My current achievements are simply the result of accepting with grace and then diving in wholeheartedly," she says. This courage to live "without limits" has enabled her to continuously break boundaries in her career.
Emily's time studying at BCIS sowed seeds that would benefit her throughout her life. The multicultural classroom allowed her to understand the power of collaboration early on: "Just like mini-programs that you find on WeChat, only partners who share common values can achieve mutual prosperity." Today, she integrates this philosophy into her investment approach—seeking like-minded entrepreneurs to build mutually beneficial long-term relationships. When speaking to young professionals, she always encourages them with her personal experience: "The secret to standing out in fierce competition is not blindly overcomplicating, but the courage to try and the ability to stay focused." She readily admits that it was BCIS's inclusive and open environment that taught her the wisdom to "embrace uncertainty."
From BCIS to the global stage, Emily's story reinforces a truth: the most beautiful landscapes in life often lie beyond planned paths. Whether in career choices or every unexpected turn along the journey of growth, she has embraced them with an open heart and cultivated them with focus. As she puts it, "When you stop clinging to a predefined trajectory, the world will open up a broader wilderness for you." This may well be the confidence BCIS education has given her—to find her own light amid diversity and collaboration.
